How to check hut availability in the Alps
The short answer is the Alpine Clubs' own booking system. We do not show live availability here, and the reason is written out below rather than glossed over.
The clubs' shared system
Huts belonging to the German, Austrian and Swiss Alpine Clubs are run through one booking system, hut-reservation.org. That is where free dates are shown, where a bed is reserved, and where the deposit is paid.
158 shelters in our table carry a direct link into that system, shown on each shelter's own page. All of them are in Switzerland, because Swiss huts are the ones mappers tag with their booking link; the Austrian and German huts on the same system simply are not tagged.
What we do not do, and why
We do not fetch live availability and we do not display it. The clubs' system has open endpoints that could be read, and in 2026 the Swiss Alpine Club asked us in writing not to use them. We agreed.
In practice: we will tell you which hut exists, how high it is, how many beds it has and when a warden is there. Whether it has space on your dates is a question for their system. That is less convenient, and it is the honest arrangement.
Huts that are not in the system
Most Alpine shelters cannot be booked online at all. 1,536 of the shelters in our table publish a phone number, shown on their page, and a single call is still the most common way a bed gets reserved in the mountains.
107 shelters state outright that a reservation is required. Most say nothing either way, which is not the same as saying no: a small hut that fills up is a hut you walk back down the valley from.
When to book
2,456 shelters in the table are staffed in season, meaning a warden, meals and a made bed. Across most of the Alps that season runs from late June to mid-September, and August weekends are the busiest part of the year.
If your dates are fixed, book the day the system opens for the season. If they are flexible, midweek in early July or early September is usually the best trade between weather and space.
