Julian Alps, the Triglav hut traverse

From Lake Bohinj over the Valley of the Seven Lakes to the Triglav huts and down to Pokljuka, the way Slovenians climb their mountain.

Slovenia's national mountain is climbed from huts, not from a car park, and the classic way in is from Lake Bohinj through the Valley of the Seven Lakes. You sleep at the lakes, cross the karst plateau to Dolič, and reach the huts under the summit, Kredarica or Planika, before the final protected ridge to the top.

The traverse is short in kilometres and big in everything else: limestone, exposure, and weather that arrives from the Adriatic without warning. The summit ridge is cable-protected and busy; the huts are large, well run by the Alpine Association of Slovenia, and full on summer weekends.

Alpine Club huts on this route take reservations through hut-reservation.org, the shared system of the German, Austrian and Swiss clubs. We link straight to it and earn nothing from a hut booking.
