Tour of Monte Rosa

A loop around the second-highest massif in the Alps, Swiss and Italian sides, with one glacier crossing at the Theodul.

In short

The Tour of Monte Rosa is a loop of about 163 km around the second-highest massif in the Alps, on its Swiss and Italian sides, taking 9–10 walking days. It passes Zermatt and Saas-Fee and crosses a glacier at the Theodul Pass (3,295 m). The season runs from July to September, and our table holds 32 huts and shelters along its stages.

The Tour of Monte Rosa circles the massif that carries the Dufourspitze, crossing between Switzerland and Italy twice. The Italian side is Walser villages and long green valleys; the Swiss side is Zermatt, Saas-Fee and the Europaweg's suspension bridge.

One stage is different from every other route on this list: the Theodul Pass crossing is on a glacier and is normally done with a guide or on the lift. Plan that day separately, and the rest is a hard but ordinary hut walk.

Level: ExperiencedExperienced walkers who want a loop rather than a line, and do not mind one day that is mountaineering rather than hiking.

How booking works

Alpine Club huts on this route take reservations through hut-reservation.org, the shared system of the German, Austrian and Swiss clubs. We link straight to it and earn nothing from a hut booking.

Members of any Alpine Club pay a reduced rate at all club huts, whichever club they joined, and membership usually includes mountain rescue cover. On a week of hut nights it pays for itself. Join the SAC

Two countries, two ways of pricing

On the Swiss side, nights are mostly in SAC huts and hotels: a bed usually costs 25–45 francs and a night with half board 60–90 francs. From 2027 add a 10-franc booking fee per night, kept on cancellation, and a solidarity contribution of 3–5 francs.

On the Italian side, Italian Alpine Club (CAI) huts follow the official 2026 tariff: a dormitory bed up to 30–39 euros, and 24–31.20 euros for Alpine Club members. One club's membership card gets member rates on both sides.

Getting there from Tel Aviv

For the Swiss side, Zurich and the train to Zermatt; for the Italian side, Milan. Both had direct flights from Tel Aviv in summer 2026.

After the disruption of 2026, direct routes from Tel Aviv open and close often, so check the current schedule before fixing dates, and book the huts before the flight.
